Our Mission
Universities are the foundation of human knowledge and civilization. Not only should they encourage innovations in academic research, they should also stress the cultivation of intellectual abilities. Research and teaching are without question the two main responsibilities of universities. In Taiwan, the past decade has, however, seen a heavier emphasis placed on universities'research performance and not enough attention on their teaching quality. If the trend continues, universities will lose their meaning and value. This is an issue that no educator should take lightly.
As the leading higher education institution in Taiwan, our admitted students are the future elites. The University's imminent task is to educate world citizens who are well-balanced in intellect and aptitude, mature in character, and open-minded. To achieve this, we must integrate the myriad of teaching resources at the University, assist faculty members in improving their teaching methods, and establish reasonable teaching assistant and teaching evaluation systems. We can then stimulate faculty's enthusiasm to teach and students'motivation to learn.
Our vision is realized in the establishment of the Center for Teaching and Learning Development on May 1, 2006. The improvement of teaching and learning quality is to be achieved through such means as research and planning, curriculum design, the hosting of activities, teaching and learning consultations, teaching assistant training, and the promotion of digital teaching. This is a teamwork involving faculty members and students who are willing to share their experiences. With the full support of the University President and the management team, we ask all faculty members and students to join us in making NTU a true world-class university.
